Deering & Down, Way on Down

A brief resume of Deering & Down tells us that the story began almost seven years ago in a small town in Alaska, when the young Lahna Deering, befriended rock and roll journey man, Rev Neil Down (no Carry On jokes please!). After a winter of writing, the duo headed to a remote studio in the Yukon and recorded their debut record, (Coupe De Villa). The two eventually found their way south to Memphis, where they recorded this record.

The five piece band feature Kurt Ruleman (drums), Rick Steff (keys) & John C. Stubblefield on bass – and with Lahna’s distinctive vocals and the Rev’s scorching solos it all meshes together in a dazzling array of songs, singing and playing.

The Rev Neil Down is on blistering form with top-notch solos on (Richard of Los Angeles) and (Can’t Wait’.) Lahna’s vocals take some getting used to but after a few listens the edgy vocal delivery makes sense – Whether it’s the bluesy (Sad Love) or the funky pop (Wonder Who’s Calling Now’) the record is blessed with some of the best song writing I’ve heard this year. Break the Record is well worth seeking out.
